Modding and Troubleshooting The Sims 3

Workaround for the Playpen and Walker reset bug

Update: This mod is now considered obsolete as I have made an actual FIX for the issue. Get the fix At Simlogical:

FIX for Walker and Playpen Reset Bug

*** Obsolete***

This mod provides a workaround for the bug affecting the Walker and Playpen premium content objects from the Sims 3 Store. Since patch 1.63, the walker and the playpen no longer function properly and cause the toddler to reset. This happens when the toddler uses one of the following interactions: Play with Abacus (playpen), Play with Mirror (playpen) or Play (Walker) and has already achieved the “maximum” skill level allowed for the object/interaction (Logic: 3, Charisma: 3, Handiness 2, respectively).

This mod removes the skill gain from the following interactions: Play with Abacus (playpen, logic), Play with Mirror (playpen, charisma), Play (walker, handiness). This means your sims will no longer be able to gain any logic, charisma or handiness skill points from these objects. Your sim will still be able to learn to talk and learn to walk on their own, but if you want them to learn logic, charisma, or handiness, you’ll need to use NRaas MasterController or another mod  to assign the skill to them.

I did try to fix this problem with a script mod, and I even tried to fix the problem by unhiding the skills for toddlers in the Skill XMLs, but none of it worked. I know that this work around will remove some of the usefulness of the premium content, but at least your toddlers will be able to use their walkers and playpens without resetting.

Note: You MUST have the Head Start Playpen or the Local Motion Toddler Walker (or both) from the Sims 3 Store in order for this mod to work. It will NOT add the objects to your game.

Important Details:

  • No Expansion packs required.
  • Requires patch 1.63.
  • This mod requires either the walker or the playpen, or both, from the Sims 3 Store to be installed in your game. You can use this mod whether you have only one object or both.
  • Again, this mod will not add the walker or the playpen to your game. You must have already installed these objects for this mod to have any effect on your game.
  • Due to its simplicity, this mod may not necessarily require an update after major patches. It’s always best to check in, though.

Super Hampers — Automatic Laundry Pick Up (Plus Bigger Hampers)

Ambitionshamper

Tired of your sims leaving their clothes all over the house? Is your click finger numb from dragging those 800 clothes piles to the hamper every sim hour (how do they have so many clothes that all look the same)? If so, prepare to rejoice. My new Super Hamper series will automagically collect all of your sims laundry without any effort on your part.

Important Details:

  • This mod is base game compatible.
    • The Super Hamper Script is base game compatible, but the hampers cloned from Ambitions, TLS and UL will require their respective EP/SP in order to be used.
    • If you want to use a CC hamper with this mod you can either provide me a link to the CC hamper, so I can make an override for you, or you can make one yourself.
  • This mod was built with patch 1.63. May work with earlier patch levels but I am unable to verify this.
  • This is not a default replacement.

Premium Content: Missing Accessories

The second most common problem when dealing with Premium Content from  the Sims 3 Store is missing accessories. Accessories are special objects that your sim uses to complete animations. Premium content that uses special animations with new objects require accessories for your sims to be fully animated. Here are some examples of accessories for premium content:

  • Ladle (spoon) for the Magic Cauldron
  • Needles for the voodoo doll
  • All food and prepping tools for the Deep Fryer/Ice Cream Maker/Teppanyaki Grill/Wood Oven/Chocolate Fountain
  • Chicken feed and Charles the Evil Chicken also baby chicks (Chicken Coop)
  • Cards and poker chips for the Poker Table/Roulette Table
  • Coin from the Wishing Well
  • Megaphone and Magnifying Glass from the Garden Station
  • Ball for the basketball hoop
  • Lemon and Purple Eggplant objects (harvestables)
  • Hot stones and needles for massage table
  • Powder bottle for Changing table
  • Binoculars and champagne glass for Hot Air Balloon
  • Ticket for the ticket machine
  • Fruit from the Tree of Prosperity
  • Sunlight from the Plants vs. Zombies Sunflower
  • Bow from the Violin
  • Arrows from the Archery range
  • Baby Dragon that hatches from egg from Dragon Valley
  • Fully repaired car from the fixer upper car from Roaring Heights

Why are Accessories Important?

Without their matching accessories, some premium content may not work properly at all. Other times, the animations might just look silly. For example, the magic cauldron works fine when the ladle is missing, but the sim looks silly stirring without a spoon. On the other hand, if the sunlight from the Sunflower is missing, your sim will not be able to use the object at all. Additionally, sometimes a missing accessory will cause a large white box to appear at the object, with the text “Missing Object…” which will look rather ugly in game. This can happen with the blackjack, poker and roulette table, as well as several other objects.

Why Do Accessories Go Missing?

There are two causes for missing accessories:

  1. The Launcher did not properly install the accessory (this is a very common problem).
  2. The Sims3pack has been decrapified (which could mean an illegal download).

It is very common for the launcher not to properly install accessories when installing sims3packs. I do not know why this is, but it has been an issue since the very first premium content objects that used accessories in their animations (More Magic! set/Magic Cauldron/Voodoo Doll). When the Magic Cauldron was first released, the official forums was flooded with complaints from people who could not see their ladle when using the Magic Cauldron. Although most people seemed to have a working ladle, there were many people who did not.

How To Fix Missing Accessories

Luckily, fixing missing accessories is really easy. To fix missing accessories:

Simply reinstall the sims3pack until the accessory shows up.

Yep. It’s that easy. You don’t need to uninstall first. In fact, I don’t recommend that at all. Just re-install the sims3pack several times in a row. It could take 3 or more tries to get your accessory to show up, but this is the best  (and least painful) way to do it.  If you want more specific instructions, try re-installing 2 or 3 times and then start your game and test the object.

If you’ve decrapified your sims3pack, you will need to find a fix so that the object will show up properly in your game. Keep in mind that, even when using a fix, your Launcher still might not properly install the accessory. You may need to re-install the sims3pack until the accessory is installed and make sure that your fix is updated.

New Mods!

I have a number of new mods out so I’ll just list them up.

Extra Credit Homework – If your sim’s kids are stuck bored at home all day due to snow days, sick days, or even holidays, give them something productive to do! With this mod, your sim kids can make up on missed school time by doing extra credit homework when they’re not in school. This mod adds a “Do Extra Credit Homework” interaction to all computers (including laptops) and MultiTabs in your game.

Store Dried Food – This mod adds a set of interactions to all treasure chests that will allow you to easily move custom edible food (dried food) to and from chests.

No Unfinished Room moodlet – This mod effectively removes the unfinished room moodlet. Under EA tuning, if a room has 0.2% missing wall or floor covering, the sim will have the unfinished room moodlet. With this mod, the room must have 99% missing wall or floor covering for the sim to receive the moodlet.

How to Make an XML Tuning Mod

  • This is tutorial is intended for beginniners, and during the tutorial we will actually make a mod: increasing the energy multiplier (faster slepeeping) on the FairyHouse. The tutorial also includes of a number useful Tips for beginners, such as opening a file as read only, using XML comments, and searching with S3PE and Notepad++

ITUN Modding Discussion and Explanation

  • Not a tutorial in the truest sense of the word, this thread explains the different fields in an ITUN resource, and how you can alter them to create the interaction tuning you want.

How to injection and interactions with a pure script mod

  • This tutorial is geared towards script modders who want to apply interactions to sims, objects or terrain without creating a new object. I don’t cover how to create an interaction, I only demonstrate how to get an interaction loaded into the game.

No Limos

NoLimos

This mod removes a number of limos that sims use when traveling around town. If you are having trouble with too many limos in your town, you can use this mod to drastically reduce the number of limos that sims are using.

The following limos are removed with this mod:

  • Limos for celebrities
  • Limos associated with the following careers are removed: Business, Criminal, Music, Showtime Performance Careers, Political
  • The .01% chance that an NPC will use a limo instead of a generated ownable car based on career level has been change to 0%.

This mod does not remove all limos (but it will remove most of them). The following limos are not removed by this mod:

  • Limos used to pick up sims for Prep school boarding school.
  • Prom Limos
  • Possibly some career limos that are in the Careers XML (Fortune Teller career and Film career). I am hesitant to alter this XML due to high chances of conflicts. If you ask me enough, I might do it anyhow.
